When to send:

  • Never: nothing is sent; everything stays on the unit for a USB download.
  • End of session (the usual choice): after every session, whatever it produced. A session without any result still sends a short message with 0 arcs, so you know the unit is alive.
  • Every N results: once N results wait (firmware with this option only).
  • Every N hours: at most once every N hours, with whatever waits.

The unit transmits only between sessions; a session is never interrupted for a transmission. Each transmission sends everything not yet sent, in as few messages as the maximum message size allows, within the daily limit; a failed send is retried after the retry time. Sent records stay on the unit until you download them.

Message content: by default a window summary (median water distance, dispersion, arcs used and seen, time span) and the unit health, plus the station position after the unit was moved or restarted. Per-arc results adds every arc (larger messages).

Size and cost come from the unit’s own encoder, live as you change any option: message size and billed size (25-byte minimum), transmissions per day, price per message, per day and per month (the access fee on its own line). The default content is about 22 bytes.

Delivery: messages go to the Ground Control / Cloudloop account that owns the modem, then to an HTTP destination or a CSV export. The app stores no account, token or secret.

Step by step, with costs: Iridium setup.
